The Song of Songs is the Song of Solomon in the Old Testament. It is a kind of love song of King Solomon for Shulamite. Jews forbade children under age 13 from reading the Song of Solomon concerning that they might misunderstand the meaning. Likewise, if it is understood literally, the Song of Solomon beautifully depicts King Solomon’ s feeling for a woman he loves. The film starts with a biblical verse, “Put me like a seal over your heart, Like a seal on your arm. For love is as strong as death...... Song of Solomon 8:6” after the opening credit. And right after the verse, this black and white film shows a close-up shot of a mother giving birth to a child with a loud groan from the pain of labor. Without any narrations or a subtitles, the film depicts the procreation of a child and the joy of the parents after the birth with only music and editing. The director captures the love between a man and a woman, the moment of agony and joy from the birth of a new life, which is another outcome caused by love, like a verse from the Song of Solomon. It shows the childbirth directly as Window Water Baby Moving by Stan BRAKHAGE shows. But this film presents the contemplation about the pleasure and joy of life rather than a shock to the audiences.
