Although it is a place where the trail ends, just like the title says, or where no one even tries to go because it’s too risky and rough, its no problem at all for these challenging, free-range mountain bikers. Rather, well-paved roads are meaningless to these riders. The more dangerous and impossible a trail looks looks, the more they desire to challenge it with exuberance. Where the Trail Ends is a documentary about the challenges professional mountain bikers put themselves through. It’s not enough to call it a challenge however - this is something they enjoy. This is a documentary about people who enjoy challenges and the testing of their own human limits. The virtue of Where the trail ends is that the film follows these bikers in a conventional way. Their tricky riding skills amongst beautiful sceneries that take them around the world are beautiful, in a way that looks extravagant but at the same time sincere and unpretentious. That’s because the film doesn’t only capture the beauty of the challenges but it also remembers that the principal agent of the challenge is human. While the amazing and phenomenal bike riding deludes us into thinking we’re watching well-trained choreography, the film intelligently diminishes the risk that the purpose of watching this film is for the sake of extreme sports itself, not the challenges that humans put themselves through, by introducing a variety of bikers. That is the reason that this documentary is captivating even though it is quite conventional. The film presents each biker’s story and the challenges they put themselves through and this suggests a variety of viewpoints where at last the audience can answer the most fundamental question, “Why do they challenge themselves, why don’t they just stop?” Eventually, we come to understand that the challenge is possible because they really enjoy it.
