Jean-Luc GODARD, Peter GREENAWAY, Edgar PÊRA
3X3D is a 3D omnibus film by Jean-Luc GODARD, Peter GREENAWAY and Edgar PÊRA. The fact that we can see a film by these three great filmmakers whose creativity is second to none is celebration enough. In this film however, we also get to experience their use of 3D technology. Peter GREENAWAY opens the first chapter of the omnibus film. This film subtitled Just in Time shows a near 2000-year history of Portugal for a 17 minutes running time. It has richness and glamour unique to GREENAWAY. He re-creates historical events from Portugal using music, narration, and text in three dimensions as well as various visual expressions such as split images and computer graphics. Just in Time is a film full of meaning and senses. It asks us to appreciate a new method of seeing, listening and reading at the same time. It demands us to utilize our sensorium to understand. The next film is The Three Disasters by Jean-Luc GODARD. He shows off his undiminished ability by interpreting ¡®3D¡¯ as 3 disasters. This is something, one would expect from someone considered the most rebellious director in film history. What GODARD ends up delivering, exceeds expectations of a 3D film in terms of the formality of the 3D filmmaking process. The Three Disasters consists of various pieces of footages from other films or image data. The narration is a footnote about human history and film history, which continues GODARD¡¯s unique style. Being so much of a Godardian film could cause consternation to some audience members who expect new 3D images, but for the audiences waiting for GODARD¡¯s new film, it could be a very satisfying work. The third film is Cinesapiens directed by Edgar PÊRA. This film sheds new light on the relationships between film and the audience, the reality and the images in films from early film to three-dimensional film, borrowing its form from the musical genre. Throughout the film, its original idea has stood out. Especially, the manner of developing the story crossing boundary lines between the world on screen and off-screen is something of interest.
