The opening scene is with a man working out for over 10 minutes at one place. From this scene, you should be able to correct your misinterpretation of the movie¡¯s title. The stationary camera is staring at ¡°myself¡± who is an unemployed martial artist living in a Gosiwon, a facility packed with tiny, single room accommodations. Finding a job is difcult. Besides, He is not only suffering physically but also emotionally. Living amid such surroundings, one makes ¡®myself¡¯ train harder to face all kinds of anxiety. Discipline, between documentary and ction, is mostly lmed by the director who is the main character. This movie is set at an empty gym and Gosiwon, both inside and out of the city. The main character, ¡®myself¡¯ is surrounded by these places in where he is trying to nd the beauty beyond pain as well as remembering his mom. Generally shooting with self-take camera shows mediocrity. Unlike this way, the camera that reects on ¡®myself¡¯ shows the circumstances in horizontal frame and follows a noble journey in which the main character is building up self-worthiness in vertical frame. The most capturing scene in this lm is when he practices his martial arts. On the one hand, martial arts have become a part of show business. Nevertheless, this martial artist has been practicing to build up his strength and balance at the corner of a crumbling gym. The long take of a martial art scene seem to have the time stand still. The honest confession with melodious music, and the destruction of the city buildings which narrows a person¡¯s place to stand is painful to see. (KIM Dong-hyun)
