This film is for those who have a bias against Arabic culture. Its theme is simple. A poor and incompetent man whose two wives already have left him is in searching for a new wife. Mory Wants a Wife is an urban version of Abbas KIAROSTAMI’s Through the Olive Trees. Yet, Mory’s story does not have a happy and warm ending like Through the Olive Trees. Mory has to face tricky urban people who do not accept wedding proposals just because they love each other. Women want three options; a good house, well-paying job and money for comfortable living. Mory has none of those. Honest and diligent Mory is unhappy with the society. He cries out that he has done nothing wrong but he cannot marry anyone in the world. He quibbles over the reason why he cannot marry. He may seem silly and senselessly. Nevertheless, escaping from his loneliness is an important issue for him. The ending and the beginning of the film is the same: him cleaning a window. The window is a metaphor for invisible obstacles in our lives. Sometimes little things get in the way to live out one’s lusts. However, this realistic social reflection of Iran keeps the comical tone. As the house owners are interviewed about Mory, we can see him cleaning in the background. Such scenes are refreshing and humorous like a sitcom. (LEE Yong-cheol)
