Hanging on multiple thin string movements, a puppet delicately moves its body. It is a mysterious experience to observe the puppet revived from a coffin-like box at the tip of an artist¡¯s hand. Just like a real person does, the puppet turns its head, walks slowly, moves its fingers, and even seems to feel emotion. This hour length work is a beautiful poetic documentary produced by Wiktoria SZYMANSKA about the legendary puppet master Michael MESCHKE¡¯s art and life. MESCHKE¡¯s puppets realistically embody various kinds of people. In the film, this puppet master MESCHKE who has lived with thousands of puppets for his life recollects his past and explains what messages the puppets try to deliver while he calmly tells us his stories about puppets that he has been together with for so long. Regardless of the puppeteer¡¯s exposed hands and manipulation, his marionettes still have the charm to attract an audience. His concern for life and death and good and evil are conveyed to the audience by puppets like Antigone, Don Quixote and The Little Prince. MESCHKE¡¯s favorite puppet Baptiste looks like a philosophical old man and it performs like a real person. As MESCHKE himself once said, Baptiste is the artist¡¯s alter ego and his other self. Especially, Antigone¡¯s tragedy gives us a chance to see the middle aged Irene JACOB again snf her talent. She played a double role in The Double Life of Veronique directed by Krzysztof KIESLOWSKI, her boyfriend was also a puppeteer in that film. She communicates with the Antigone puppet like she does with a real person and shows great acting as if she has become the Antigone. Through her acting, she becomes a living breathing character in the Greek tragedy. The affect of a great artist who has created puppets, given souls unto them and communicated with the world through these puppets touches us in this documentary. (KIM Yoona)
