Synopsis

AIDS is considered to be an incurable disease, an epidemic caused by sexual deviance. However, such perceptions about AIDS are far from true. We do not know the truth about AIDS but only widespread misconceptions and rumors. The essence of the truth that we are not aware of is that Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is a curable disease. The patients of AIDS simply need to take drugs. What is the problem then? It is the price of drugs. Pfizer¡¯s chokehold on the AIDS/HIV drug treatment means it raises the drug prices every year. As a result, the rich can afford the drugs and their lives are saved through treatment. On the other hand, the poor cannot receive drug treatment and die in pain and suffering. Most of these impoverished patients of AIDS are found in the deprived countries of Africa and Asia. Although ninety percent of the world¡¯s AIDS patients are in these regions, the drugs that they receive only make about one per cent of the total drug treatment. There is a simple solution. If generic drugs of Diflucan are manufactured, they could be available for one-seventieth of the original price. Yet, the covetous greed of the major pharmaceutical companies means that they prevent the manufacture and distribution of generic AIDS drugs. What they value more than anything else is the pool of rich customers who can afford the expensive drugs. It doesn¡¯t matter to them how many AIDS patients around the world die each day. Fire in the Blood argues that AIDS patients should have access to cheap generic drugs. Something must be done about the pharmaceutical companies raising the drug prices for their own financial benefits. The gigantic pharmaceutical companies of USA even use political reasons to stop the manufacture of generic drugs. Although there have been nationwide attempts to address this unethical issue, the morality of international laws is simply effectual and powerless when contronted with such conglomerates. This film faithfully fulfils the role of a documentary in whistle-blowing and recording the truth by presenting us with some specific cases, articles and the voices of people, who lament that ¡°where the diseases are there aren¡¯t any drugs, and where the drugs are there aren¡¯t diseases¡±.
