Synopsis
Travelling alone, internationally acclaimed photographer and filmmaker Raymond Depardon spent six years capturing his home country, from cafés and factories to forests and highways, with a large format 20x25 camera. This long, solitary road trip provided fertile ground for the creation - with his long-time partner, collaborator and sound engineer Claudine Nougaret - of an extraordinary travel journal. Beyond their ethnographic interest, the richness of those pictures provides a solid argument for the uniqueness and splendor of celluloid and watching Depardon takes his precious time to snap the perfect street scene offers up a powerful antidote to an era inundated with disposable digital imagery. Trailing the photojournalist as Depardon drove across the Gallic countryside to shoot a new series of landscapes, the journey returned Depardon to important places from his past as a reporter - Chad, Venice, Cannes - and to a wealth of previously unseen footage from his archive raging from the 1960s through the present - an interview with Jean-Bédel Bokassa, film of Jean-Luc Godard, extraordinary glimpses of private and public life. Intimate, compelling, revelatory, Journal de France offers a unique portrait of a country and its landscapes, an overview of a truly remarkable career and a fascinating resume of the development of the photographic art over the past half century.

Raymond DEPARDON
Raymond Depardon is a photographer, a journalist and a filmmaker and respects others and is kind with the reality of their lives. He was born in Burgundy and went to Paris in 1958 to be a photographer. His films are screened in all international film festivals, from Cannes to Hong Kong. Claudine NOUGARET
Born in 1958, Montpellier, France. After studying at the University of Aix-en-Provence and at Paris VIII, starting her career as an intern sound engineer on Alain Resnais’ movie Life Is a Bed of Roses. She then works as an assistant sound recordist on about 15 French feature films. 1984 she does the production sound recording of Eric Rohmer’s The Green Ray, which receives the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1986.
