In spring of 2011, the director takes a camera and a coat to cover himself with when he is sleeping outdoors and travels through places he has never been to: Ganghwa to Mokpo in the west, from Gunwi to Seorak in the east, and from Jangheung to Milyang in the south. As the title implies, this documentar y is indeed ‘a trip to South Korea’. It is a document of inter views with about 10 0 people in 26 regions covered over 38 days. A Trip to South Korea consists of a collage of images of places, landscapes, and the lives of people who live there. It contains a color ful collection of people who shared their food with the director, gave him a place to sleep, and willingly struck up conversations ranging from day laborers, students, migrant workers, sailors, and farmers to the homeless. Each has their own stor y and dream of having a normal life but know that it’s dif ficult and is filled with rage toward the privileged in this societ y. W hat makes it really interesting is not what they say in front of the camera; it is their faces and gestures, the sign of the times as well as the characteristics, the subconscious, and emotions of the individuals. Some are camera conscious, some are drunk and seem to fall apar t in front of the camera, and some seem to stare straight at the audience outside the screen. T his is a sense of vitalit y that is unique to each individual being regardless of rank, age, occupation, or gender. A Trip to South Korea is a journey that records the lives of marginalized citizens who have never got ten any at tention in this dark countr y and the fact that they are indeed alive. (NA M Da-eun)
