Broderick FOX
Autobiography has long been considered an act of privilege. It¡¯s been great white men of power who have had access to the means to document and distribute their stories that are structured around superlative acts and accomplishments. The Skin I¡¯m In is about the director Broderick Fox himself - son/Eagle Scout/valedictorian/ professor/filmmaker/club kid/drag queen/sex worker/alcoholic, his brush with death, and his search for self and spirit through the transformative ritual of tattooing. Fox¡¯s journey, spanning Germany, Canada, Japan, Kenya, and the United States, invites all of us to actively explore the world and continue to challenge ourselves rather than simply accepting the status quo. It is the latest in a series of unflinching autobiographical works Fox call ¡®embodied media,¡¯ in which he use his personal stories and physical body to challenge cultural assumptions and norms around sex, gender, and sexuality and to break the often - strangling silence of shame. It is a global conversation about the aspects of self we rarely talk about-issues of identity, past trauma, creative frustration, addiction, alienation - revealing that power, purpose, artistry, even momentary states of grace, await beyond these cultural and private wars.
