Fandom is a routine phenomenon and a driving force since almost everyone remembers having worshipped a star at some point in their lives, but the scale and intensity of it in Korea in the 21st century is virtually unrivaled. Teenagers who follow the stars that they adore whilst forgetting about school or daily life are the disdainful topic of discussion for various kinds of media and adults. No one looks into the exhilaration and conflict that exist within. Not for Nothing is a film that gets close to the true nature of fandom in this day and age as the director who actually used to be an avid fan of an idol group and is now pondering over whether to continue her activities as a fan or not poses questions to herself and the people around her. The protagonist and director carefully documents the voices of her parents, friends, and fan club members and succeeds in painting a portrait of a generation that is in perfect synch with pop culture and the sadness of seeing the fervor disappear. Reality conveyed through the voice of the same generation to show an aspect of the times that is more revealing than any expert analysis makes it even more meaningful. At the end of this faithful observation, she asks, ¡°Do we really not know what prevents us from dreaming?¡± and it is now our turn to answer. Figuring out the meanings of new terms like ¡®ilko¡¯ (someone who pretends not to be a fan when they actually are), ¡®saseng¡¯ (stalker fan), and ¡®sanok¡¯ (pre-filmed program) are a bonus.
