HAN Dong-hyuk
The title of this documentary What Do You Want from Me! ends with an exclamation point and not a question mark. It is because director-slash-protagonist is not asking what choice he has after he drops out of school but he is crying out loud to people asking to trust him and to support his decision. Since he was a child, he has dreamed of becoming a filmmaker. He chooses to drop out of the school in order to study whatever he likes and live an independent life. But grown-ups and even his friends are being so judgmental about his choice. They try to persuade him to finish high school, as they believe that higher levels of education lead him to a good position in the society and that high school dropout can be an easy mark for social prejudice and discrimination. The director cannot help but wonder why he can¡¯t freely choose what he likes to learn and make his own way instead of attending mainstream school. The documentary follows the journey of the main character as he overcomes slump and loneliness, and pushes himself forward to pursue his dreams. Listening to the people around him and making his own video diary, he pledges himself to prove that his decision to drop out will open new possibilities and potential. (PARK Hye-mi)
