How does time pass in human life? It¡¯s usually filled with eating, sleeping and lazing around. In this moneyminded world, however, time also goes in circles that people sell their labors in order to make money and spend their money on buying commodities. During the course of time, hydraulic excavator digs a mountain and the urban redevelopment plans weeps away the livelihoods. Despite the changes over time, it still remains the fact that cit y birds fly over the streets searching for their food, and that love tat too car ved on the forearm in one¡¯s youth doesn¡¯t fade away. Even though the camera keeps staying on the director himself and his family, the director seems far from an exhibitionist or a narcissist. He expresses his feelings with t yped words appearing on screen, not his voice. The director simply stares at ¡®the subjects¡¯ through the camera aligned with them. He takes a thought ful and deliberate approach to this personal documentar y, which tends to exclude disguised indif ference or intentional distance from the scene and to ser ve as a contemplative path to your true self. Life is a journey through time that creates emotions unable to describe in words. The resulting memories become par t of personal histor y in one¡¯s existence. L aced with a thought ful meditation on time, The Day Going to Market at tempts to put the first-person documentar y on the right track. And this unconventional approach heightens the expectations for director¡¯s nex t documentar y The Time of Son (working title). (SHIN Eun-shil)
