Synopsis

A house is a building in which people live, usually the people belonging to one family. A nd it also ser ves as a shelter that can protect you from hot or cold temperatures, wind and rain. Remanent People is about this place we call home. Ironically, the documentar y explores Owk-hwa¡¯s home where she no longer lives. The camera captures the place where her husband Jung-jin is lef t with his t wo sons af ter O wk-hwa died of cancer four years ago. Hoping to set up his own junk shop some day, Jung-jin scrapes a living for himself and his children by dealing in waste paper and cardboard. And he star ts dating. Brought up by their aunts, the boys are not happy about his girlfriend¡¯s staying over their house. T heir home is located in the urban renewal area. Low-angle shot encompasses ex terior walls of the old house, a gas stove with grease and food stains and hinged door loose of the sink. Jung-jin¡¯s shabby house is on the verge of being torn apar t and so is his family. He believes that marr ying his girl friend will help to come to terms with grief over the death of his wife and to fill the emptiness inside him. But the boys, contrar y to his wish, don¡¯t approve of their new stepmother. Memories of qualit y time with his family is now only preser ved in home videos and photos, which make him realize his late wife¡¯s absence more than ever. Por traying Owk-hwa¡¯s home that never allows something new, Remanent People at tempts to ask some crucial questions: How do we deal with grief af ter loss of mother or spouse? Where does true value of home lie? And what keeps a family together? (PA RK Hye-mi)

    Heo Chul-nyung was born in 1986 in Seoul. He studied in the Department of Broadcasting Studies at Korea National University of Arts. Heo directed Young People (2006), a film about the followers of the well-known biologist, Hwang Woo-suk. He also made A Noted Place (2010) exploring removal of Se-woon shopping district.
