Im Heung-soon
T he original title of this film, ¡®Bee-nyeom¡¯ means ¡®a small scale exorcism¡¯ in Jeju Island dialect. T he film star ts its journey in Kang Jung Village in Jeju and tours through Aewol (Jeju), Osaka(Japan) and Seogwipo (Jeju) to gather the testimonies of various people. Like a shaman reciting a tale at an exorcism this process recalls a cer tain event of the past in the present. A past that has forced almost an entire village to share the same day to per form ceremonial rites for the dead, and others to roam unfamiliar places and curse their hometown as the ¡®world¡¯s most horrific place,¡¯ a past that continues to repeat itself but dif ferently still to this day. T he fact that both the April 3rd, Jeju Uprising in 19 4 8 and the current Jeju Kang Jung Village naval base construction involve State enforced public power which ultimately exer ts violence against civilians, they resemble each other. How can the State shooting at young men and the government blowing up the rock considered a village¡¯s spiritual symbol for the sake of constructing a naval base be dif ferent? I wonder if the day will come when no irony whereby State violence against the people can happen at the same time when the government can celebrate the same location for being selected as the ¡®New 7 Wonders of Nature¡¯ can exist. But for now it is such a frustrating situation. (HUH Kyoung)
