The World over 80s Table Tennis Championship opens in Inner Mongolia. Eight players from all over the world whose total age adds up to 703 gather to the sports venue all with hopes of earning what might be the last gold medal of their life. Just by looking at them one cannot help but recall words like retirement, nursing home, health problems and loneliness. But in fact the world of sports these elderly people present are as youthful and energetically-charged as sports players in their prime of their abilities. Ping Pong traces the paths of elderly people who refuse to surrender to the pressures of physical age to explore and rediscover the passionate human nature to win and the amazing tenacity hidden within. In addition, the film provides the chance for self-reflection on the subject of death that everyone ultimately has to face. The 82-year-old Terry from UK who was diagnosed to barely make it through a week recovers his health as he prepares for the championship while the 90-yearold Inge from Germany ailing from dementia discovers a new life through ping-pong. The 90-year-old Les who had spent his entire life exercising to be in shape has with the help of his family managed to maintain his title as champion for quite some time while Dorothy from Australia, the game’s oldest player who just celebrated her 100th birthday is more than pumped up to win the championship. Just with the sound of the ball dropping on the ping-pong table, Ping Pong touches on the problems of an ‘aging society’ which has become one of the most serious issues of modern times. One sixth of the world population is over 60 and within less than 20 years, one fourth of the world population will be over 60 years of age.
