Synopsis

Nine of the most prominent Korean independent documentary filmmakers answered the call of the people. They got together in Kangjung, Jeju Island. The beautiful beach near Kangjung village will soon be buried under concrete due to the construction of a new naval base. That moved the nine directors to each make a cheering song for it. Jam Docu KangJung is an omnibus documentary consisting of nine short episodes. This film is premised on an oath for solidarity among the voices of the activist directors, but its significance outstrips a single issue or one collaborative project. In the mid 1990s, a general strike broke out nationwide due to an amendment to the labor bill. At that time, documentary writers and organizations issued the news bulletin for the general strike and strife to respond to their calling in society. It has been 15 years since then, and now Jam Docu KangJung suggests a new possibility for collaborative projects. The directors went back and force between observation and participation, contemplation and vitality, and provocation and attentiveness. They captured the circumstance, the psychology of the people and those relations in various points of view. As a result, they produced a robust picture incorporating many points of view. They were able to accentuate their own individuality and yet preserved the central frame. They achieved the objectives and without allowing the quality to suffer. As Yang Yoon-mo, who went on a hunger strike, said: ¡°the beauty shining from the common sea and the deep sound of love¡± will reach the bottom of the audiences¡¯ hearts. (KANG Seokpil)

The news of the construction of a naval base in Kangjung village on Jeju Island has summoned numerous directors. These nine directors are Kyung-soon of Shocking Family, Choi Ha Dong-ha of Taxi Blues, Hong Hyung-sook of The Border City, Kim Tae-il of No Name Stars, Choi Jin-seong of Hitchhiking, Kwan Hyo of One Way Ticket, Jung Yoon-suk of The Home of Stars, Yang Dong-kyu of Children of the Island, and Chon Seung-il of Memory of May. These directors created individual episodes from their respective viewpoints and in their unique styles, and through numerous meetings the episodes were finetuned to share one tone and rhythm. This film, which plays upbeat, jam-like improvisation with this serious issue, will give life to this project and work as a catalyst in addressing the issue of Kangjung village.
