Synopsis

It is a record of a fight to oppose the construction of a radioactive waste disposal facility at Buan-gun, Korea in 2003. It is an anti-nuclear, environmental documentary by director Lee Kang-gil, who previously made Save Ours Saemankum - To Live (2006). One may not expect fun or high-quality from a film made with such a definite theme: pro-environment, anti-nuclear, and questioning of the democratic process. However, one may find this film properly with the perspective of politically correctness. The film is a well-made documentary, with realistic yet stable cinematography; seasoned editing underscores a calm observational perspective and feelings, and inserts show Korean traditional landscapes and sentiments. The director¡¯s long experience of making documentaries on environmental issues is highlighted in this film, and the audience will find it amusing to follow his story. People of Buan-gun, a beautiful yet declining village in the southern part of Korea, are convinced by the unconfirmed rumor that attracting a national project to the village would bring handfuls of cash to them, and the governor of Buan-gun unilaterally applies for the project and the money. A three-year-long campaign by people in Buan who fear for their children and the future of the town finally reverse the decision to attract the nuclear waste disposal facility. The reality that the voice of the people is distorted by capital and authority is often observed in Korea. This is a film that lets the audience think about value of the future over small immediate profit. (JEONG Minah)
