Synopsis

It is a 14-year-long record of love and farewell between pornography director Hirano and actress Yumika. In 1996, Hirano started a 40-day bicycle trip with Yumika, with whom he was having an affair. Yumika wasn¡¯t used to wild adventures and complained how tough the trip was for her. When Hirano failed to film their journey, Yumika called him ¡°Director disqualified.¡± The camera on either hand of Yumika or Hirano followed their private lives. In 1999 this record became a successful theatrical documentary, titled Yumika. Later their relationship ended, but with an otherwise unsuccessful career as a director, Hirano went looking for Yumika again. On her birthday, Hirano visited Yumika¡¯s house with his camera and found a tragedy of his life. Happening upon the scene of her death, his camera was on and recording, and the audience hold its breath to witness the scene. It was 2005. Not being able to overcome the shock he experienced for 5 years, Hirano was approached by Yumika¡¯s mother who never let him use the tape of the scene. Suspicion of her questionable death, sadness for the loss of a loved one, guilt about recording the death: the only way for him to overcome all these agonies is to create a film about her. His hurt mind is gradually healed as he watches close-up shots of her face on screen. Documentary becomes a private record of a person and a medium for cure at the same time. It is an interesting private documentary in which the camera¡¯s object, the cameraman and the audience become one. (JEONG Minah)
