Two young men from Midland Texas, David McKay and Bradley Crowder, were arrested at the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, for possessing Molotov cocktails and planning to injure police. The FBI investigated this case as a domestic terrorism case and put them on a trial. But are they really terrorists as they were accused? Through a series of interviews of them and the parties concerned, the fact that Brandon Darby had been at the center of the whole plan gets revealed. A radical activist and the co-founder of Common Ground Relief, Darby was a mentor to the two 22-year-old boys over months to advise them on political directions and the detailed actions. And the shocking news: he was a FBI informant and the bureau was watching them the whole time. The interrogation process and testimonies which are reconstructed through recordings and transcripts raise even more doubts. Would McKay and Crowder, who were perhaps just young idealists dreaming of a better world, have chosen violence if they hadn’t met Darby? Couldn’t it have been prevented when the FBI had been aware of what’s going on? It seems that the two may have been found as “terrorists” by the government in need of finding some to excuse huge budget spent on fighting terrorism since 9/11. Shedding light on issues such as the criminalization of protest and dissent, an increasing culture of government surveillance into the lives of average citizens, this film provides an insightful observation on post-9/11 America under the influence of terrorphobia.
