Synopsis

A Piece of Tale is a story of two young men who live in Rangkasbitung, a small city 120 kilometers from Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. Kiwong and Iron were childhood friends and are now making a living by selling tofu on trains and in markets. Used to be beaten up when young, Kiwong moved to Jakarta later and lived a wild life. He came back to Rangkasbitung after being married and settled as a tofu seller. He also believes in a ¡°magic power¡± which gives people surreal power. Iron makes and sells tofu, the family tradition, but he has a secret passion for music—not in making albums, but onstage performance. The daily life of these two young men captured by the camera seems to have no extraordinary features or significant social context. They just make tofu, go to markets, play guitar in a studio and play with children. These scenes are apolitical and values-free but, when looking into the recent history of Indonesia, one would easily understand why it is so important to focus on individual everyday life. When Suharto stepped down due to the protests in 1998 after three decades of iron-fist ruling, Indonesia started to enjoy a sudden blessing of democracy. And individuality is highlighted in the process, because the civil society suppressed by the state during military rule can grow based on this individuality. Individuality is a starting point for individuals to form communities which can participate in democracy. In that, this film focuses on the newfound individual life and it is actually quite political. (KANG Seokpil)
