Synopsis

Journey of the Freshwater travels from the DMZ to high mountain swamps, valleys and the Bukhan River, and then from the source of the great rivers to depict the life of the Han River. In addition to that, there is Upo Swamp in which aquatic life flourishes. Carnivorous plants in cold water lacking minerals live on the nutrients from the insects they catch. Never before seen in Korea, Agriotypus gracilis Waterston is introduced. Parasitic nematomorph hairworms eventually drive other insects to commit suicide. These are only a few examples of the rare aquatic life portrayed in this film. The director captures the creatures with exquisite scenery and great techniques like time-lapse photography with moving camera. The climax comes when the thousands of dayflies in the Bukhan River area fill up the sky like snowflakes. Towards the end, the director says, ¡°Water has to flow no matter what; we can¡¯t change the course of water.

Flowing water gives birth to life and that is the origin of us.¡± However, not only do we stop and change the course but we also go against it. We can¡¯t help showing respect to the sanctity of other creatures. (KANG Seokpil)
