In 1990, Polish documentary filmmaker Christoph Janetzko staged an interesting documentary production workshop with the support of the Goethe Institut Manila in which found footage from major film studio editing rooms was rearranged into experimental films. Footage in various formats ranging from Super 8mm, 16mm to 35mm negative and positive film were reshot and reassembled with added sound to explore the theme of ‘Facism that leads to global annihilation’. The results combine the first official president of the Philippines, Manuel L. Quezon’s (the first unofficial president of the Philippines is Emilio Aguinaldo who fought against the U.S. attack upon the Philippines) 1935 inauguration speech which recognized the U.S. supremacy in the Philippines, a speech by Hitler, and the Andrew Sisters’ “Rum and Coca-Cola” which rocked the Billboard Chart during the Second World War. In the case of this somewhat decadent political film, the true spirit of compilation documentaries – matching or clashing the diverse sensibilities of each piece of footage and applying sound to create new meaning – comes to life. During the compact running time of 6 minutes and 30 seconds, the Philippine’s colonial history is impressively expressed through images of massacre and destruction committed to a lively Calypso rhythm, proposing the U.S.-Philippine alliance as a sexual relationship. In its effort to fill the gaping holes in history, this film definitely makes its mark for paving the way for other Asian documentary films with the same purpose. (PARK Sohyun)
