Synopsis

The story revolves around an elderly farmer tending her fields on the border between the two Koreas. Living on the other side of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), she struggles to reclaim the land that was taken from her by the local government. The aged protagonist has already experienced the heartache of losing her homeland to the ravages of war. A poignant memory from seventy years ago resurfaces - during the Korean War, American soldiers suddenly entered her village. The subsequent division of the Korean peninsula and the course of development took away everything she held dear.

Review

After fleeing her hometown during the Korean War to join the U.S. military, the elder lady Lee Ki-in farms on and off the Civilian Demilitarized Zone. Through her story, The Land of Frogs depicts her noble efforts to maintain her ties to the land in the face of endless threats. She farms on the "front land" inside the DMZ, but it is not a place where she can settle down, as she must pass through a strict border. The "back land" she has been working on is reclaimed in the name of creating a park to commemorate its history. Her struggle to lead the elders and prevent the development is ultimately defeated by the law and the system, but it leaves a profound message. If we erase the traces of the present and create a space for memorialization, what will we remember? In a land where division never ends and development never stops.
