Due to the full-scale Russian invasion in Ukraine, tens of thousands of Ukrainians, fleeing the war, found refuge in a small town in western Ukraine. A local director decides to involve non-professional actors – displaced people - in bringing his dream into life - to stage the ¡¸King Lear¡¹ play.
Amidst the Russian invasion, tens of thousands of Ukrainians sought refuge in the western Uzhhorod region. A director in this area decides to stage the play King Lear with fellow displaced individuals. In these circumstances, why prepare a play, and what does the tale of a mad king's fallen dynasty signify? Shakespeare's King Lear portrays the downfall of a royal family due to the king's flawed judgment and the treachery of his greedy children, ultimately leading the mad king to realize true love and the value of life too late. According to the director, both King Lear and the displaced individuals have lost everything, been expelled from their homelands, and must rediscover love to continue their lives. In King Lear, the youngest daughter, Cordelia, who knows true love, dies, and King Lear himself meets a tragic end. However, the tale of displaced individuals, who find their purpose and roles while appreciating the time given even after losing everything, need not conclude with everyone's death. Those participating in the play walk among crumbling buildings in front of the camera, sharing their sorrow, and the play itself becomes a time to express and share sorrow on and off the stage. Above all, this act of nurturing and empathetic love within the play will become a cornerstone that supports our lives.
