Synopsis

Through her child¡¯s eyes, Patpro will go through three periods of the history of her indigenous people, in the heart of the Brazilian forest. Tirelessly persecuted, but guided by their ancestral rites, their love of nature and their fight to preserve their freedom, the Krahô never stop inventing new forms of resistance.

Review

The Buriti Flower combines ethnography and poetic narrative to unfold a story on the memories of the Brazil Kraho Indian community. There are three main characters: an adolescent girl named Jotat, her mother Patpro, and her uncle and shaman Hyjno. Patpro wants to go to Brasilia to attend a demonstration against the Bolsonaro regime¡¯s pro-business and anti-conservation policies. However, Jotat sees shamanistic visions in her dreams and worries about her mother¡¯s aspirations. The film mostly focuses on how Patpro and Jotat understand each other over time. The Buriti Flower is the story of cultural tradition, political resistance, trauma, and resilience. It also shocks the audiences with the unforgettable trauma of the 1940 massacre. Although this documentary features characters acted by non-actors, its combination of fiction and documentary is never a trickery. Unlike other hybrid films, the co-directors, Joao Salaviza and Renée Nader Messora, are not interested in capturing the performative characteristics. The film hints that it is not hard for people, who have been brutally abused for years, to appear as the main characters of fictional stories, have their own perspectives, and take active actions.
