Synopsis

Documentary film chronicling the protests in Thailand between 2020 and 2022 shortly after the accession of the country's new head of state. It is an uprising of people from all sectors, especially students, against the use of power by the government of Prayut Chan-o-cha, the Prime Minister, which has come from the coup. There is mismanagement of the country and abuse of power in dealing with political dissidents. This includes the arrest of internationally recognized Thai political activists.

Review

Uruphong Raksasad, whose sensitive cinematic language depicts the hardships of the Thai people, including peasants and commoners, spends much of his time on the streets of Thailand between 2020 and 2022. To document the pro-democracy protests sparked by young people across the country who were disappointed with the monarchy and the government. The resulting film, Songs of Angry People is an intimate look at the three-year struggle. High school students in school uniforms and young university students stand at the forefront of protesters calling for reforms to the monarchy, including the elimination of royal insult laws, and the resignation of a military-connected prime minister. But despite their persistence, the tide of repression keeps rising, and it is the songs that provide a breathing space amidst the images of never-ending struggle, repeated resistance, and repression. From site to site, a variety of songs, with lyrics that represent the voices of the Thai people, echo and encourage the struggle. The youth and musicians transform the streets and squares of Thailand into an arena for the culture and art of resistance. At the end of the film, we cut to a scene where the people with the microphones are unable to speak. Their voices are replaced by the voices and songs of the people in the square. It's arguably the most powerful and poignant moment of the film's many depictions of democracy in the square.
