Non-Aligned & Ciné-Guerrillas is a documentary diptych of two feature-length films that take us on an archival road trip through the birth of the Third World project, based on unseen 35mm materials filmed by Stevan Labudović, the cameraman of Yugoslav President Tito. Ciné-Guerrillas: Scenes from the Labudović Reels plunges us into the media battle that played out during the Algerian war for independence where cinema was mobilized as a weapon of political struggle against colonialism.
Traveling to Algeria, director Mila Turajlić discovers that a Yugoslav is at the center of the country's modern history. Stevan Labudović was a cameraman for Yugoslavia's president, Josip Broz Tito. He travels to Algeria in the late 1950s, at the behest of the president, to live with the soldiers of the Algerian National Liberation Front and document their struggle for independence from France. Director Mila Turajlić, whose previous films, including The Other Side of Everything, have demonstrated an extraordinary sensitivity to history, meets Stevan Labudović to retrace his steps and follow him on his current journey. Turajlić's curiosity leads her to unearth hundreds of reels of film from long-forgotten archives, and her authenticity encourages Labudović to reveal his memories and insights into history. Only decades later will Stevan Labudović's films be shown to the public in Algeria, where screenings will be held to honor his legacy. Cine-Guerrilla: Scenes from the Labudović Reels is a tribute to the extraordinary life of a documentarian who became part of history by recording it.
