Young independent filmmaker and reporter Lina goes underground to document the Syrian revolution, adopting a series of aliases to avoid detection from the violent state. She uses video diaries of smuggled footage and memoir to share this personal story of her close group of friends – Susu, Rima, Malaz, and Bassel – as they are slowly pulled deeper into the struggle for freedom and autonomy against enemies known and unknown.
5 Seasons of Revolution is a documentary about a stranded revolution and a portrait of young Syrian journalists struggling for freedom with hope. Lina, the film's director and protagonist, has many names: Maya, Laila, and Rama. She uses several pseudonyms to evade authorities, posting the footage online in the face of the Assad regime's massive crackdown following the 2011 revolutions of Arab Spring. She risks going into areas where government forces are indiscriminately bombing, and she closely documents the divisions among Western-backed rebels. Alongside the urgency of the images, 5 Seasons of Revolution also features scenes that are rarely seen on the news. Journalists gathered online to reflect on the aftermath of their work. With great affection for her colleagues and friends, Lina compellingly shows how they are both frustrated and hopeful in the face of terrible threats. This is the most concrete and intimate report on journalism and activism ever produced by young people living in a repressive regime in the age of social media.
