Synopsis

Bob has scheduled his own death in seven days. Now he must make peace with his family, the love of his life, and himself.

Review

Bob is a Jewish New Yorker who joined Woodstock at the age of 15 and designed the bathrooms for Elton John and Janet Jackson. But this humorous and energetic man gets diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and only 7 days are left for him because he decides to end his life with the Death with Dignity Act. Man on Earth is a film that shows the last week of Bob¡¯s life in a witty but poignant way. While there are many films on the aftermath of diseases, Bob¡¯s attitude toward death makes this film more special. The film approaches his strong resolution to say goodbye to the world through aid in dying and his calmness in continuing his daily routine in the form of a documentary. The film takes the form of an observational documentary that prioritizes the subject and the subject¡¯s environment. Director Amiel Courtin-Wilson records the last moment of life that anyone must face with Bob¡¯s sentimental story. Suddenly, the film transforms into a meditation on death and asks questions about the struggle with pain, how to cope with death, and the meaning of complete life. The film uses traditional camerawork, such as a handheld camera, and soft lighting to help audiences immerse in the film. Bob¡¯s efforts to reach the family, loving people, peace, and rest until the last breath show the completion of humanity that does not end with death.
