This documentary delves into Mara, Jeju, and Chagwi Island, showing encounters with people and objects. It intricately depicts the journey of transplanting deceased tree roots from Mara Island to the Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art. Throughout the film, it encourages contemplation on themes such as the intimidating allure of the ocean, the lure of solitude, and the reverberations of isolation. These roots, washed ashore by a typhoon, resided on Mara Island for nine years before finding their place in the museum. The film deftly captures the passage of time, the change of place, and the moments of isolation.
To prepare an exhibition on solidarity between solitude and isolation, the writer collects and solidifies the stories of women who live on isolated islands, such as Jeju Island, Chagwido Island, and Mara Island. The narrations of solitude ¡°where moments of solidarity become beautiful¡± such as a story of a woman living in an English Village after receiving development compensation, a woman who ran away three times due to forced marriage, and a female angler of Mara Island, are combined. Their Own Ways takes the ¡°Dead Tree¡± of Mara Island as an object that symbolizes beings who endure in solitude. This essay documentary investigates places, people, objects, and scenery, develops them into ideas, and utilizes multiple tools such as pictures, animations, and texts.
