In 2020, Belarus¡¯s military practice of violent bullying, torture, and murder of conscripts as a means of control becomes a flash point for a growingly dissatisfied populace.
Motherland begins with a family visiting young enlisted men in Belarus with mandatory military service. This film criticizes society with military and continuous war by capturing a journey totally different from a welcomed encounter. A woman who lost his son due to violence during the military service searches people who went through the same experiences to record and publicize them and fight against the unjust reality. Meanwhile, a group of young men hangs around the city and a man named Nikita joins the military service first. In Motherland, the military is paradoxically both the outcome and cause of war. Violence exists inside the military even before confrontation with the enemy. The critical mind focuses on the cruel war scenes and expands to another level to discuss how violence is continuously exercised and imprinted in modern society. The film also captures the huge flow created by the citizens resisting against dictatorship in Belarus. Young men who are not conscripted yet are also part of the flow. Motherland deeply observes the reality that makes the war continue. It asks the audience how to free the culture and future from national violence. Such an issue is challenging but unavoidable for Korean audiences.
