Hee-won(director) is a ‘global talent’ working as an intern at a media production company in Australia. Nearing the end of her internship, she decides to look for farm work in Australia. She teams up with Joo-hyun, Jong-dae and Jong-hyun, who have joined the Working Holiday Program from different background and with different dreams. Together they embark upon a journey to get their hands on some farm jobs. However, the moment they start a race to obtain a Second Year Visa, their Working Holiday immediately turns into Holy Working Day. The Second Year Visa scheme allows Working Holiday Visa holders to extend their stay in Australia for another year, as long as they have completed 88 days of work in primary industries as farm or factory laborers. With their hearts set on getting a Second Year Visa, they survive on cheap snacks and noodles, and never stop searching for more and more labor even when they have severe muscular pain. They end up harvesting onions, which is a job most notorious for its heavy workload and low pay among all kinds of farm works in Australia. One day, their local friends make some shocking comments: “You are living like slaves. Is the Second Year Visa that important to you? Why does that matter so much?” Only then does Hee-won take a break from filming and laboring and recalls the many days she spent feeling ‘busy, insecure and tired’ in her current struggle to get a Second Year Visa. It is at this point that Holy Working Day gains universality as a coming-of-age film of today’s youths and thus distinguishes itself from other Working Holiday stories. (KWON Eun-hye)
