This documentary begins with a question: Are high school seniors in Korea enjoying being 19 years old? With this question, Society Banned Nineteen wants to identify the gap between being high school senior and 19 years old and look into what stands between them. The word ¡°high school senior¡± instantly reminds people of college entrance exams and studying, but ¡°being 19 years old¡± embodies the values that go beyond entrance exams and competition, such as youth, challenge, and dreams. The question also expresses the sad resignation and sorrows of the young who are forced to blindly run forward in order to prepare for future success and stable life. Having to choose ¡°the present as a preparatory stage of the future¡± or ¡°the full present¡± is neither simple nor clear. But it is an undeniable fact that most high school seniors are pressed by society and adults into running toward college entrance exams without listening to their hearts. By showing such critical mind in relation to the familiar notions of ¡°high school seniors¡± and ¡°19-year-olds,¡± the director presents a clear and sharp questions and introspection. A high school student who replied that the priority goals of studying are university, money and happiness brings a significant implication in that such portrait is not limited to an individual, but our society at large.
