Synopsis

How are depression and anxiety among women in their 20s and 30s linked to the huge structure of discrimination? The film, which consists of four chapters and an epilogue, talks about mid-pregnancy and mental illness based on a private narrative, overlaps the experience of discrimination from other generations, and looks back on the boundaries that divide the parties and non-parties. Through the five stories, we want to find the possibility of connections that can counter discrimination and hatred.

Review

In 2021, amid the fervor of a protest demanding the passage of the Anti-Discrimination Law, five directors found common ground. Young, queer feminists, media activists, and writers, they resolved to channel the echoes of the protest into their own lives and experiences. What Bonds Us, an omnibus film born out of solidarity, offers a glimpse into the potential for collective action within Korean documentary filmmaking. The five interwoven short films explore a range of subjects, from the anxieties of young women to the blurred lines between normalcy and abnormality. This work's power lies in how these young directors confront their own stories, seeking liberation from discriminatory norms and internalized self-censorship. The journey towards solidarity begins with acknowledging one's own minority status and recognizing the differences in others. Through this challenging yet empowering process, powerful declarations like "I am you" emerge. In 2024, as the Anti-Discrimination Law remains unrealized, this film serves as a vital catalyst for fostering greater connections and solidarity.
