Review

Farmers dispossessed, tidal flats decimated, workers displaced. Militarism flexes its muscles, while the logic of ruthless competition, fueled by neoliberalism, reigns supreme. This is South Korea at the turn of the 21st century. 16 Takes on Korean Society begins with the question, "What kind of world are we living in?" It's the culmination of a collective project by diverse individuals active in their respective fields in 2005. While it follows in the tradition of earlier omnibus films, like the Migrant Workers¡¯ Interview Project, this monumental work is more than a series of short films—it's a comprehensive collage of South Korean society. At the heart of this project lies a spirit of solidarity, with director Lee Mario and other documentary filmmakers striving to understand and connect with each other's realities. The film also marks a pivotal moment in the transition to digital cinema, just before online streaming became fully established. It was distributed through a variety of methods, including community screenings, free online releases, and downloads. Yet, the most compelling reason to revisit this film lies in the questions it provokes: How different is our society now, nearly 20 years later? Have we truly "progressed"? These reflections alone make this film worth revisiting.

In December 2005, he initiated and led a collaborative project that examined the escalating social issues within South Korea. Currently based in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, he actively fosters collaboration with local filmmakers through a cooperative he helped establish.
