SYNOPSIS
Congratulations! You’ve been selected as a validity rater for the datasets behind emotional AI technologies. Reenacting laboratory data collection processes, Welcome to Set invites you behind the scenes of machine learning. This experimental documentary explores the body politics of emotion and suspicion within algorithmic security practices. (This film is screened with Yakiniku ToRaJi.)
REVIEW
Welcome to Set presents a series of experiments in expression and response, testing them on a group of participants. In one, a participant repeats the same sentence while conveying an undisclosed emotion. The audience must guess whether the feeling is happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, or something else. Yet no definitive answer is ultimately revealed, leaving the purpose and outcome of the experiment ambiguous. A later test involving the control of responses offers similarly little certainty, since interviews never clarify what the participants actually felt.
On the surface, these experiments warn that human reactions may become data to be analyzed and decoded through AI. But if the film is approached as an experience in itself, the experiments begin to seem less concerned with conclusions than with ambiguous responses and images as such. From this perspective, the film becomes not a warning about the future but a mirror of the present. In a world organized through stark binaries—like and dislike, agreement and opposition, friend and enemy, masterpiece and failure, beauty and ugliness—perhaps what we have lost is the capacity to endure ambiguity. Welcome to Set argues for the necessity of what cannot be easily analyzed or reduced to a clear answer. (KIM Sohee)
DIRECTOR'S NOTE
Congratulations! You’ve been selected as a validity rater for datasets behind lie detection algorithms. Reenacting video samples of lies for machine learning, Welcome to Set invites you to observe and evaluate how the ingredients of these technologies are made. This experimental documentary explores the artificiality of “artificial intelligence” where genuine feelings escape the data/film set.
