REVIEW
Animation-based experimental and documentary filmmaker Lei Lei has cultivated an oeuvre rooted in nostalgia for remnants of a bygone era. In Break no. 1 & Break no. 2, Lei continues his exploration of elusive memories, bringing them to life through vibrantly composed montages of ordinary objects. Part 1 features a wordless narrator recounting a friend's suicide through rainbow-hued archival images. In Part 2, the narrative drifts through a video hall, haunted by the specter of censorship. These parallel narratives spark the imagination, enhanced by monotonous music and carefully orchestrated visual compositions. Lei Lei's interplay of still images, video works, and CGI melds geometric image flows, architectural evocations, and aesthetics of traditional Chinese art.
DIRECTOR'S NOTE
An assemblage of still images and video work, both real and imagined, Break no. 1 & Break no. 2 explores the fragility of human memory as it relates to the moving image and the unconscious.
