Modern Korea Cinema
The ¡®Modern Korea Cinema¡¯ section celebrates KBS's groundbreaking Modern Korea - KBS Archive Project (¡®Modern Korea¡¯), which has revolutionized broadcast documentary production. Noe entering its fourth season in 2024, ¡®Modern Korea¡¯ has not only transcended conventional broadcast documentary norms but also pushed the boundaries of documentary filmmaking by drawing a vast archive of diverse footage. For Season 4, the core project team was tasked with creating cinematic versions of ¡®Modern Korea¡¯ that stand apart from their broadcast counterparts. These 60 to 80-minute films will be presented in theaters as full-fledged cinematic experiences. The section features four films, including one directed by Lee Taewoong, the producer behind the Seoul Olympics 30th anniversary documentary 88/18 (2018), who played a pivotal role in the creation of this series. The other three films are directed by producers Youm Jisun, Lee Eunkyu, and Han Seokgu, each presenting their own unique work within this section. Additionally, a feature-length documentary, The Korean Variety Hour, specially crafted to chronicle the history of Modern Korea, will make its premiere. This section provides a unique opportunity to explore Modern Korea series through a cinematic lens, highlighting its pioneering role in essay documentaries. These films create new meanings and contexts, recalibrated by contemporary themes and issues, while overcoming the limitations of public broadcasting and preserving the original context.
