Expanded
The ¡®Expanded¡¯ section explores the documentary form's inherent tendency to reflect on its medium, broadening artistic discourse and aesthetic sensibilities. Its primary aim is to push the boundaries of aesthetic practices and offer audiences new perspectives by delving into cinema's unconventional relationships with other media. This section may include analog and digital film, installation art, performance, new media, music, and various extensions of these artistic pursuits. These works not only expand the possibilities of documentary but also reveal the interstices between established categories.
This year's carefully curated selection of over ten expanded films provides an open platform for cinematic forms drawn from a wide range of disciplines, including art, photography, music, graphic design, and new media. The context and diversity of the presented works are robust, striving to create an inclusive space for expansion while challenging social norms and artistic conventions. In tandem with stimuli from politics and society, these works attune us to the evolving landscape of contemporary documentary and contribute to a framework for productive discourse. Some screenings in the Expanded section will occur as part of the Non-Theatrical Program, presented as installations outside the traditional theater setting, further pushing the boundaries of how we experience documentary cinema.
