The flow of international documentary films shows the direction of innovation in modern film language aesthetically and structurally. To reflect this, the DMZ Docs Program Selection Committee has established a new overseas competition category, Frontier Competition. This section which is named after the dictionary meaning of ¡®crossing the border¡¯ is designed to compete with works dedicated to aesthetic adventures and new cinematic visions that challenge the inertia of documentary genre. This year's Frontier Competition selected works that reconstruct documentary experiences from hybrid trends of fiction and non–fiction, which are prominent in contemporary documentaries, to essays that reflect on recorded images, combination with performance, and media experiences created by new technologies such as games and VR. From world–renowned documentary masters to emerging directors with noticeable debut films, creators from various histories and backgrounds present their own vision and grammar. Frontier Competition aims to give more space to brave films that don't acknowledge artistic taboos. We are confident that the personality of this section, which is free, provocative, and controversial, will create a vibrant arena where the energies of various creators compete.
