I AM DOCU
“Hayda Lubnan” (this is Lebanon) is the fatalistic phrase with which the country responded to the return of the war in 2006 and it is also what filmmaker Eliane Raheb always heard her family say when Lebanon went through a new political crisis. With this phrase as its starting point, this documentary takes a look at the people who, despite the fatalistic attitude that surrounds them, do not give up on their hope to one day see a truly democratic country free of religious conflict. While the aftermath of the Summer 2006 war seemed to leave no hope for political change, she restlessly tried to meet those who do not give up on the hope of a better future in her country. With an acute sense of observation and a close inquiry into the everyday life of her people, she tracks the events that followed the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafic Hariri. Can the elections be truly democratic? Is there a future for those youngsters who long for a democracy free of religious references? How does her own family cope with the Christian Maronites’ increasing loss of power? Skeptical but resolutely optimistic, director Eliane Raheb is willing to be swept away by the euphoria of the public demonstrations she’s filming, or by the faith of her friend Fadi, who assures her that after the Syrian withdrawal, the different Lebanese communities will finally be able to live in harmony in a free, independent country.
Eliane Raheb was born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1972. She graduated from the Institute of Stage and Audiovisual Arts (IESAV) at Saint Joseph University in 1995.
