Synopsis

Jin-kyoung holds an exhibition of her artworks for the first time in ten years. The film focuses on both Jin-kyoung’s works and her life. She ‘recycles’ her past experience and incorporates them in her current artworks: she uses burnt textile and stuffs from her burnt-down atelier; she draws on scorched books the landscapes of her new home; and she paints the hardships of building a new art studio. The film also bridges the past and the present. The film interweaves the past and the present by showing the footage of Jin-kyoung in the old days with her current voice-overs. The technique of telling an individual’s life through his/her artworks is nothing new, but this film succeeds in capturing implications that are beyond the superficial link between a person and the works. Jin-kyoung’s works compel us to reflect on today’s ‘labor,’ in which men are enslaved to time and capital. The film also brings to our mind the lost dream of ‘living a content life even amidst poverty’; the dream of someday doing ‘work,’ not ‘labor.’ (Lee Seung-min)
