Masterclass

The DMZ International Documentary Film Festival will invite Argentinian world-renowned filmmaker Fernando E. Solanas and Israeli filmmaker Avi Mograbi and take the opportunity to listen to their film world and philosophy of film. Solanas of The Hour of the Furnaces, the 50-year-old legendary film in the film history, is the living witness of the Third World Cinema movement, and Mograbi presents an interesting example of new political film with unique humor and paradox as tools to dissolve Zionism.

1. Fernando E. SOLANAS

The event holds the conversation between Argentine master Fernando Solanas and leading Korean documentary director Kim Dong-won. A Journey to the Fumigated Towns, his new film the DMZ Docs presents with The Hour of the Furnaces, addresses in depth the Third World agriculture problem and the food imperialism issue due to the transgenic agricultural model with agro toxins of large multinational food companies such as Monsanto. The Masterclass of Fernando E. Solanas will provide a valuable opportunity to directly hear about the life and works of the documentary master, which will be a vivid testimony to the history of the ‘Third World Cinema’ movement.

2. Avi MOGRABI

The event will invite Israeli filmmaker Avi Mograbi to talk about his film world and philosophy with film critic Yoo Unseong. Mograbi’s films have gone through many changes in the style. If his early films are in a first-person narration with a unique paradoxical humor as a tool to dissolve Zionism, his latest films could be regarded as works with more experimental style of documentary. Avi Mograbi’s film world is expected to show an interesting example of a new cinematic struggle.
