Call for Papers : “International Conference on Cinema, North Korea, and the Division of a Nation”

Call for Papers

DMZ Documentary Film Festival (DMZ Docs) calls for papers to the “International Conference on Cinema, North Korea, and the Division of a Nation” which will be held in Seoul/Goyang, South Korea on September 21-22 2019. DMZ Docs celebrates its 11th festival this year and extends the festival’s range to academic discourses. This year’s topic for the conference is “Cinema, North Korea and the Division of a Nation” under which related issues can be widely presented and discussed. Subtopics may include, but not limited to:

  • Documentaries on North Korea and the Division of Nation
  • North Korean filmmaking
  • Cinematic projection of North Korea
  • North Korea’s representation on celluloid
  • National division as a structure and condition of filmmaking
  • National division as a source of cinema discourse
  • Nucs and conflicts and film
  • Refugees and crossing borders
  • International views on the North Korean films
  • South Korean depictions of North Korea and the division of the national
  • And other related issues

Paper proposals are all welcome across from all disciplines. They do not necessarily have to be in film studies, but have to be academic research. Short proposals in 300 words should be submitted to the organizer by or before July 31. Final selection can be made even before the end of the submission deadline if there are enough number of good proposals collected. Selected presenters will be invited to the conference with the benefits of following supports:

  • Three nights of hotel accommodation (Breakfast included)
  • Invitation to the Opening Ceremony of DMZ Docs on Sep 20th, and all other receptions and events during the festival period
  • Comprehensive pass to the DMZ Docs to all screenings
  • Organized group tour to DMZ

The conference will not offer airfare support. Participants should organize their own travel to Seoul on their own expenses or funding.

Important datelines:

  • Proposal (300 words) deadline: July 31 or earlier
  • Notification of acceptance: August 7
  • Confirmation of participation: August 15
  • Submission of papers, bios, photos: September 10
  • Conference presentation on September 21

We are also considering a publication of selected papers in a special issue of a journal, which has not been confirmed. Once collected, we will apply and negotiate with one or two journals. For those who want to participate in this publication opportunity:

  • Submission of complete paper for journal publication: November 15.
